Eileen Gray’s innovative Bibendum Chair was one of the 20th century’s most recognisable furniture designs. The chair is very much for lounging in and socialising. Its back/arm rest consists of two semi-circular, padded tubes encased in soft leather.

The chair was designed for a millionaire; Madame Mathieu Lévy who was a highly successful boutique owner which sold stylish hats. Lévy had commissioned Gray to re-design her apartment on rue de Lota in Paris.

How our chair is made:
The visible part of the frame of the Bibendum i.e. the legs, are made of polished stainless steel. The framing of the actual seat is made of beech wood. The seat, back and arm rests are encased in soft, Genuine Italian leather. Gray made a point of using plain coverings for this particular chair.

The full curves and chunky frame of this classic piece of designer furniture will make it integral to any living room, office, lounge or hotel setting.

Neglected for most of her career, Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now regarded as one of the most important furniture designers and architects of the early 20th century and the most influential woman in those fields. Her work inspired both modernism and Art Deco.

Her design style was as distinctive as her way of working, and Gray developed an opulent, luxuriant take on the geometric forms and industrially produced materials used by the International Style designers, such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Mies Van Der Rohe, who shared many of her ideals. Her voluptuous leather and tubular steel Bibendum Chair and clinically chic E-1027 glass and tubular steel table are now as familiar as icons of the International Style as Le Corbusier and Perriand’s classic Grand Confort club chairs, yet for most of her career she was relegated to obscurity by the same proud singularity that makes her work so prized today.

Please inform us by email or phone of your decision to return or exchange your furniture within 14 days and we will organise a collection date. A collection charge of £25 will be applied.

2.     Two year guarantee.
Our guarantee covers any defect in manufacture and materials, allowing for fair wear and tear. In the unlikely event of a claim, we will repair or replace your furniture entirely free of charge.
