Eero Saarinen created this beautiful table in 1956 as part of his Tulip range. The range was so named because of the slender, elegant stem like pedestals and organic shapes that typified all of his pieces. 

Saarinen wanted to escape the tedium of legs and square surfaces that had encroached on furniture of the time and created this table with smooth lines and no edges. 

Materials & Features

The top piece is an impressive bevel-edged satin smooth marble surface. The thick coated marble top surface has a transparent polyester coating to help eliminate damage. All of our natural marble tops have protective sealer coats on them. The marble is available in black or white.

The base is constructed from moulded, cast aluminium, and then strap polished and coated in tough, abrasion-resistant rilsan finish. The bases are colour co-ordinated to match with the black or white marble top.

Eero Saarinen (August 20, 1910 – September 1, 1961) was a Finnish American architect and product designer of the 20th century famous for varying his style according to the demands of the project: simple, sweeping, arching structural curves or machine-like rationalism.

Saarinen first received critical recognition, while still working for his father, for a chair designed together with Charles Eames for the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition in 1940, for which they received first prize. The "Tulip Chair" became the basis of the seating used on the original Star Trek television series.

Saarinen is now considered one of the masters of American 20th Century architecture. There has been a veritable surge of interest in Saarinen's work in recent years, including a major exhibition and several books. This is partly due to the Roche and Dinkeloo office having donated their Saarinen archives to Yale University, but also because Saarinen's oeuvre can be said to fit in with present-day concerns about pluralism of styles
